"1857 to 1947 Diaries: The Hidden Pages" is an initiative focused on documenting lesser-known aspects of India’s freedom movement. It highlights individuals, movements, and events that have been underrepresented in mainstream historical narratives - including local revolutionaries, contributions by women freedom fighters, rural and tribal uprisings, and ideological movements across the subcontinent. Spanning the period from the First War of Independence in 1857 to the country's liberation in 1947, the platform presents curated research, archival material, and documented accounts that offer a broader understanding of the independence struggle.
This is an attempt to pick up the various pieces of history, that we find in a variety of formal and informal records of those times. These have been woven together to present what seems like a logical fill up of the gaps in our history. Its objective is to make these overlooked stories accessible for educators, students, researchers, and citizens seeking a fuller picture of India's journey to freedom. We invite support by way of evidence that one may find in village/ panchayat records, old diaries and books in personal collection or public libraries and archives. Any evidence supporting the sequence of events or to the contrary is welcome. We also invite a critical review of what has been presented here. It is to be understood that this website does not just act as yet another website promoting glory blindly, but attempts to bring out these “Hidden Pages” out in the open for further potential research.
